| EDITOR'S NOTE |
| |
This dictonary is a pocket-size language reference work for beginners and average readers. Between the covers of this dictionary are collected over 4,800 single-character and 24,000 multiple-character entries, which encompass not only words and compound words but also idioms and set phrases. Apart from everyday words and expressions, the dictionary also contains common classical Chinese expressions and scientific terms. Illustrative phrases and sentences, often samples of the latest development in meaning and usage, are provided wherever necessary and explanatory notes on usage are given in English in an effort to cater for the needs of both Chinese readers in learning and writing English and English speakers who work, study or travel in China.
The compilers owe a particular debt of gratitude to Mr. He Daji and Ms. Guan Xiating of the China Translation and Publishing Corporation for their helpful comments on the manuscript and meticulous reading of the proof. |
